Home Depot, the world’s largest buyer of construction materials, is labeling its most environmentally-friendly products with a new “Eco-Options” label. They expect the line to include 6000 products by 2009, which will make shopping easier for consumers.
Home Depot’s vice president for environmental innovation says that “given the option of a product that performs just as well, we are seeing the consumer would rather buy something that has less of an impact on the environment.”
Building materials, appliances and other products will be Energy Star rated, certified by the Forest Stewardship Council or Scientific Certification Systems (SCS). Suppliers that qualify for the Eco-Options label will receive prominent shelf space and marketing in sales fliers to raise awareness.
