The roof that sits atop the American Society of Landscape Architects building in Washington, D.C. is now green. Flowers and grasses have been planted to provide several benefits. Greenroofs reduce a building’s electricity usage; can lower the urban heat island effect; provide storm water management, absorption of pollutants, and wildlife habitat…all from a roof that will last 2 to 3 times longer than an ordinary roof.
