Some Green Efforts Can Go Further

Yesterday, I was enjoying the last of my organic strawberries from Driscoll’s, thinking of how much better they were for me, the workers who picked them, and the environment. Then, when I went to put the plastic container in the recycling bin, I noticed it had a #6 on the bottom, indicating that I couldn’t recycle it (and I’d like to know where one could recycle that!).

I wondered why Driscoll’s would bother growing organic strawberries, but not package them in environmentally-friendly containers. So, I decided to call their 1800 # (1 800 871-3333) and ask them if they have efforts underway to use only recyclable packaging in the future, and to my pleasant surprise, they do! Some of their products are currently packaged in PETE #1 plastic and they will be transitioning in the near future to solely use recyclable PETE packaging.

The representative thanked me for my concern and asked if she could send me a coupon for my future purchase. I thought that was a nice gesture.

    That’s good news that they’re going to change! Nice of them to give you avoucher too. Our local organic fruits come in lovely papier mache punnets that I then decorate and use as gift boxes.
