We found a few more places where artisan tile can be found. Ceramic tile has several environmentally friendly characteristics. It’s made from natural, often local ingredients; is durable and long-lasting; does not emit VOCs; and sometimes contains recycled content. Keep in mind though that kiln firing of tile is energy intensive. Some American craftsmen (and women!) still make tile the old-fashioned way and sell their variety of treasures at local shops, museums, and online. Here’s a list of ones we like:
- Morvavian Pottery and Tile Works, Doylestown, Pennsylvania (See these unique tiles being made during tours of this amazing historic factory!)
- RTK Studios, Ojai, California (”BirdPark” tile pictured here). Colorful Mediterranean and Middle Eastern style motifs
- Meredith Art Tile, Canton, Ohio. Nature-inspired motifs
- DuQuella Tile and Clayworks, Portland, Oregon. Specializing in Art Nouveau, Arts & Crafts, and Art Deco tile
- Pewabic Pottery, Detroit, Michigan. Mostly nature-inspired designs
Just like any quality, hand-crafted product, you can pay a premium for artisan tile ($14.50 and up–per tile), but you’ll be supporting your local craftsmen. Remember to give them enough time to make the decorative tiles (they generally need 2-8 weeks for your order (custom or standard).
