Michigan Becoming a Green Building Leader

Oregon takes the lead in the number of LEED certified green buildings, but California and now Michigan are gaining momentum. According to Freep.com, “A mass training effort [by Green Built Michigan] of at least 1000 builders and increasing awareness of the structures’ reasonable costs and energy-saving features is gearing up the state to go greener.”

A typical cost premium to build to high performance standards is only 2% more than conventional construction, and payback from energy and water savings is only a few short years. Plus, building green allows for better indoor air quality and waste reduction during construction.

In a slowing housing market, green-built homes may have a competitive advantage as well.
