Green Power is electricity generated by non-polluting, renewable energy sources like solar, wind, geothermal, methane gas, biomass, and hydro power. Just because you may not have those things in your backyard doesn’t mean you can’t get your electricity from greener, cleaner power sources.
Many utility companies offer options which allow customers to support investment in renewable energy by paying a small premium. Click here to see utility green pricing programs across the nation.
Even if your utility company does not offer such green power options, competitive marketers are allowed to offer green power in more than a dozen states. Click here for more information.
You can also purchase what are called Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) from independent marketers and brokers without switching your electric company. RECs support investment in green power sources and offset a customer’s electricity usage. For a list of companies that sell RECs and the type of renewable resources they support, click here.
To verify that the company you choose to support green power is legitimate, there are certification programs and advertising and marketing guidelines. Here’s a list.
