Green New Year’s Resolutions

As we reflect on this past year’s accomplishments and mishaps, the message to “Save the Environment” was certainly at the forefront much of the time. I was thinking about New Year’s resolutions, and it occurred to me that I’m not sure that I ever made any. So in the spirit of global tradition, I thought I would come up with at least one.
I already do my best to have as little impact on the environment as possible, but there’s always room for improvement, right? I resolve to do these simple things:
- Reduce my plastic consumption by not buying bottled water, but instead getting one of those handy SIGGs. I will also try to finish all my food when going out to dinner, to avoid getting a non-recyclable, non-biodegradable “to-go” container. Or I suppose if I don’t feel like pigging out, I could always bring a container with me to put my leftovers into.
- Bring my own thermal mug, instead of using a paper cup that will inevitably end up with the billions of others in the landfill, whenever I go out for coffee.
- To save energy and reduce my carbon emissions, I’ll turn off the lights, tv, computer, etc., when I leave the room. I’ll also not run the unnecessary heated dry cycle on my dishwasher. And, I’ll turn my heat down when I’m heading off to work or to “dreamland”.
- I’ll use only non-toxic cleaners to improve the air quality in my home.
- To save water, I’ll consider purchasing a front-loading washing machine and new high efficiency toilets (HETs) when it’s time for replacements.
- When purchasing gifts, home goods, clothing or other items, I’ll think about the environmental impacts of those products and see if better alternatives exist.
Okay, I think that’s enough for right now. As more ways to conserve come to me, perhaps I’ll add them to my list.

some good ideas, especially the plastic…here are mine…the big one is watch out for palm oil, very difficult to do but important as the world’s forests are being savaged to get it
