While looking for renewable energy solutions, California’s PG&E is considering utilizing more biomethane gas. According to an article at Reuters.com, “Biomethane is pipeline-quality gas derived from organic material such as agricultural crops, manure or wood wastes.” Well, since there seems plenty of that across the country, why not capture it for the positive purpose of generating clean electricity?
Currently PG&E does purchase some methane from cow manure, but with the help of other utility companies, needs to reach the 20% mark that California regulators set to generate electricity from renewable resources (wind, solar, geothermal, etc.) by 2010. They’re getting close with 12% already coming from such renewable energy sources.
