Skylights are a definite plus, especially in dark spaces, but not all of them are created equally. Since they receive direct sun during the summer and have to manage greater differences in indoor and outdoor temperatures in winter, being energy efficient is an important attribute. Plus, you’ll save money by keeping your heated or conditioned air inside the house instead of letting it escape out the window.
The Energy Star program by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency makes selecting skylights easy by displaying its label on the most energy efficient products on the market . These products incorporate the latest energy-saving technologies such as low-e glass, multiple panes, gas-filled panes, and improved frame materials.
