As a way to curb carbon emissions in the state, the California Energy Commission (CEC) recommends, in its 2007 report, the requirement of net-zero-energy performance in residential buildings by 2020 and in commercial buildings by 2030.
The photo shown here is of a net-zero-energy home in Borrengo Springs, CA. This nature-mimicking home gets its power from a 3.75-kilowatt photovoltaic system.
According to a recent article at BuildingGreen.com, “A 2006 law requires California to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020; this law has spurred several initiatives to promote renewable energy projects, including small-scale renewable generation projects for residential and commercial buildings.”
Of course I hope that all of the USA will have such lofty goals. Some states are better than others, but as time passes, the reality of having to cut energy consumption will come to light for everyone.
