This year Computerworld wanted to award recognition to those IT users and vendors that make concerted efforts to be environmentally-conscious in their day-to-day practices. In an industry that is known for consuming significant amounts of electricity, measures to reduce a company’s carbon footprint can really have a positive impact.
Companies were scored upon measures to increase energy efficiency; conserve electricity; recycle unused/discarded high tech equipment; conduct videoconferencing and telecommuting to diminish unnecessary travel; utilize clean, alternative energy sources, as well as other strategies.
Pennsylvania-based, medical insurer Highmark, Inc was recognized as leader of the pack. The company’s new data center has been LEED-certified by the U.S. Green Building Council for its deep shade of green. Click here for a list of honorees.
