Green Roof Goes Up To Educate The Public

green-roof-construction-corvallis-oregon.jpgResidents of Corvallis, Oregon have long been dealing with problems associated with storm water runoff. This past Saturday, volunteers from the Corvallis Green Building Task Group began constructing a green roof in Starker Arts Park that will serve to educate the public on storm water management.

The park building’s green roof native plantings will soak up rainfall, filter the excess and store it in a 400- to 500-gallon cistern, and then allow the overflow to water plants in a nearby “rain garden”. Not only do green roofs provide a natural solution to storm water management, but they provide an extra layer of insulation to buildings, therefore helping to moderate indoor temperatures.

See my earlier post about green roofs here. Stay tuned for an in-depth look at green roofs coming soon.
