In an effort to reduce the 100 million tons of construction and demolition debris that the building industry generates annually, designs are sought after in a Lifecycle Building competition.
The challenge is to present designs that promote green building by minimizing waste and greenhouse gas emissions, and maximizing recovery and reuse of building materials. It comes at a critical stage because between 2000 to 2030, 27% of existing buildings will be replaced and 50% of the total building stock will be constructed. Obviously, we need to reduce the demand on our landfills.
The 2nd annual event encourages students, architects, reuse experts, engineers, builders, product designers, educators and environmental advocates to apply for the web-based competition.
The competition is co-sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Building Materials Reuse Association, the American Institute of Architects, Region 4 Partner Southface Energy Institute, and West Coast Green.
