An innovative concept has been sweeping parts of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts which pays recyclers back for their efforts. RecycleBank is a system where recyclers earn points based on the weight of the items placed in special recycling bins. The reward points can then be used to shop at hundreds of participating stores.
RecycleBank also makes it easy to recycle by allowing users to throw all recyclable items, like paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, tin, and aluminum, in one container. Another important incentive is the shared information regarding the tracking and measuring of a household’s recycling efforts.
According to an article at Time.com, “Recycling rates in one of the first Philadelphia neighborhoods that RecycleBank served, rose from 7% to 90% in a matter of months and total waste sent to landfills is down considerably.”
