The Los Angeles Community College District is making strides towards energy self-sufficiency for its nine campuses. It recently revealed four acres of solar panels situated atop a carport which will not only shade the cars of students and faculty, but will generate 1.2 megawatts of electricity per day — half of what’s consumed on campus.

This project, along with other green endeavors, will allow LACCD to reach its goal of being 100% off the power grid by the end of this year. By doing so, it will save the district $12 million annually, as well as reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,160 tons.
