Off-the-Grid Homes Around the Globe

How great would it be to not have to pay utility bills? Well, homes that are “off the grid” do just that by relying on renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.

Treehugger recently profiled five examples of such innovative homes. To minimize their carbon footprint, the homes take advantage of passive solar design, photovoltaics, solar hot water heating systems, daylighting strategies, wind turbines, and super-insulated construction techniques, like strawbale construction.
