A study conducted by Calvert, a mutual fund company that promotes socially-responsible investing, and Boston College’s Institute for Responsible Investment, ranks the top 13 publicly-traded homebuilders. It reveals the slow, but improving, progress being made in the green building movement here in the United States.

The study evaluated each company’s policies, programs, and actual performance regarding energy use, building materials, water use and land use.

The rankings, from best to worst, are as follows:

  1. KB Homes of Los Angeles, CA.
  2. (Tied for 2nd place) DR Horton of Ft. Worth and Pulte Homes of Bloomfield Hills, MI.
  3. Centex, Dallas, TX
  4. Lennar, Miami, FL
  5. Ryland, Calabasas, CA
  6. 7 Beazer, Atlanta, GA
  7. Meritage, Scottsdale, AZ
  8. Toll Brothers, Horsham, PA.

Four builders came in on the “sustainability bottom rung”: K. Hovnanian, MDC Holdings, Standard Pacific and NVR Inc. The good news is that all 13 builders were constructing some “Energy Star” homes, which are at least 15 % more efficient than the industry average.
