Builders Win Awards for Saving Trees

Everyone wins when trees are saved during the construction of homes and buildings: wildlife can continue to enjoy established habitats, and occupants of those buildings benefit from cleaner air and water, as well as energy savings from shade trees, and of course from the beautiful surrounding scenery. Two builder-developers have recognized the importance of saving trees and have been honored for their efforts.

The 2008 Building With Trees Awards of Excellence were recently presented at the National Association of Home Builders’ (NAHB) National Green Building Conference in New Orleans. Northland Residential Corp. of Burlington, Massachusetts, and Parker Development Co. of El Dorado Hills, California were recognized for their exemplary tree conservation practices.

Northland Residential Corp preserved more than 900 existing trees at its development of “The Woodlands at Belmont Hills near Cambridge, Massachusetts. Parker Development Company restored a site of former mining and heavy agriculture. The company dedicated 240 acres of the 612-acre planned community to open space and preserved and enhanced majestic oak woodlands, cottonwood forests, tree-lined trails, and seasonal wetlands.
