Want to save energy and money on your cooling needs? Energy-efficient ceiling fan/light fixtures that carry the Energy Star label can be 50% more efficient than conventional fan/light units. By using improved motors and blade designs, and efficient and long-lasting lighting, these ceiling fans will keep you cool while saving energy.
Here are some tips to make sure your ceiling fan works safely and efficiently:
- The metal outlet box inside the ceiling that houses the electrical wiring needed to operate and connect the ceiling fan must be UL rated and marked “For Use with Ceiling Fans”.
- A Ceiling fan should be properly sized and anchored to a ceiling joist to support its weight safely.
- Balance a wobbly fan by making sure all connections are properly aligned and tightly fastened. Also check the blade holders to make sure they are positioned correctly. If it’s still wobbly, you may need to use a balancing kit (blade weights and balancing clips).
- Turn off the fan, to save energy, when not in the room as it cools a room’s occupants, but not actually the room.
- For maximum cooling during summer months, be sure your fan is moving in a counter-clockwise direction.
- Use energy-saving, compact fluorescent ceiling fan light bulbs.
