Need a New HVAC System? Look for the Energy Star Label

How do you know if your old HVAC equipment needs replacing? According to Energy Star, a program brought to you by the US Department of Energy and the US Environmental Protection Agency, there are many things to look for:

  • Is your HVAC unit more than 10 years old?
  • Is your furnace or boiler more than 15 years old?
  • Does your HVAC equipment need frequent repairs and it costs increasingly more to operate?
  • Does your home have too much humidity or excessive dust?

If it turns out that you do need new HVAC equipment, Look for the Energy Star label and save up to $200 a year on energy bills! There may also be rebates or tax credits available on new systems through your local utility or governmental programs.

First, check for leaks in your duct system and seal them, along with insulating any duct work in unconditioned space. Other spots of air infiltration to seal up include the attic door, and floors, ceilings, walls, outlets located on exterior walls, and window and door frames around your home. Then, be sure to purchase properly-sized equipment for optimal efficiency. “Your contractor should determine the right size for your HVAC equipment by using ACCA/ANSI Manual J or an equivalent sizing calculation tool that takes into account specific information about your home.” Other important procedures your contractor should follow include: testing and correcting air flow, verifying that the refrigerant level is correct, and placing the equipment in the proper location.

Be sure to install a programmable thermostat for maximum operating efficiency of your heating and cooling system. Regular maintenance and changing of air filters are also essential practices.
