Net Zero Energy House Produces its Own Power

In scenic East Montpeilier, Vermont, a 2,500 square foot home stands as a solid example of sustainable construction. From its geothermal heating system and comfy radiant floor heating, to its foam-based insulation and triple-glazed windows, this home and its owners are energy efficient.

The homeowners take advantage of a “net metering” policy which allows them to sell any excess power they generate from their solar photovoltaic panels to the local utility company. When the power of the sun is strong, they generate more than enough power to run their home, but when the sun doesn’t shine, they need to purchase power from the utility company. Over the course of a year, it all adds up to zero, that’s right zero!
