Students and faculty are anxiously awaiting the completion of Kroon Hall, Yale’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (FES) building, which is being constructed to meet a LEED-Platinum rating by the U.S. Green Building Council.
LEED certification, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, ensures that green building standards have been met to ensure an energy-, water-, and resource-efficient structure. In this case, the FES building utilizes strategies that will reduce its energy use by 75% compared to a comparable conventionally-built facility. Natural daylighting and ventilation systems are being used, along with solar & geothermal energy systems, rainwater harvesting, sustainably-grown woods, regionally-available materials, and concrete that provides thermal mass.
The end result will be a building that reduces its environmental footprint and provides a healthy space for its occupants. It will include a library, an auditorium, a student learning center, classrooms and offices, and is expected to welcome students and faculty for the Spring ‘09 semester.
