If you’re thinking of warming up your home this winter by adding insulation, new windows, or an energy-efficient heating system, you might want to wait a couple of months. Federal tax credits for certain energy efficient home improvements won’t be available again until next year.
The ‘Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008′ includes tax credits up to $500 for qualified residential windows, doors, roofs, insulation, HVAC, and non-solar water heaters placed in service between January 1, 2009 – December 31, 2009. According to EnergyStar.gov, “The maximum amount that a taxplayer may claim from all of these tax credits combined is $500 over the lifetime of the tax credit (2006, 2007 & 2009).”
Installing a solar water heater, fuel cells, or a photovoltaic or small wind energy system, will allow a homeowner to receive a tax credit of 30% of the cost of the system. This one’s good even for those building new homes.
