Eco-friendly Slate Roof Series, Part II

From recycled tires and car bumpers to scrap rubber and plastic, synthetic ‘slate’ is a sustainable roofing option that looks like the real thing. Lighter and easier to install than authentic slate, these low-maintenance roofing slates are also non-breakable with the color going all the way through the product. Class-A fire ratings and 50-year warranties are commonly available for these enduring products.

Pennsylvania-based EcoStar’s Majestic Slateā„¢ is made from up to 80% recycled post-industrial rubber and plastic. The roofing ‘slates’ are impact- and wind-resistant and available in 9 colors and 6 styles, as well as in two widths (10″ & 12″). It is available throughout the United States through company representatives. This roofing option can contribute to LEED credits for your next project (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design — a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council).

Canadian company Authentic Roof West offers Californians 12″ wide roofing ‘slates’ made primarily from recycled polymer and rubber materials which results in a 100% recyclable product.

RoofRoc, based in British Columbia, Canada, offers synthetic slate comprised of limestone and 17% recycled polyethelene. The ‘slate’ is available in 4 distinct profiles and 4 colors.

Another Canadian company called EuroSlate/EuroShake manufactures a rubber roof slate that is composed of 60-70% recycled tires. This results in a recyclable product that is available in 8 colors.
