7 Ways to Lower Heating Bills this Winter

Here’s a list of some easy things to do this winter that will help to lower your utility bills:

  • Let the sun shine in! Open your blinds and curtains during the day to allow sunlight to add some warmth to your home. Be sure to close them at dusk to keep the cooler air from coming in.
  • Lower the heat a couple of degrees and put on some warmer clothes. Also, by lowering the temperature to around 60 degrees while you’re away at work or play, or overnight when you’re all cozy in bed, you’ll save some dough. A programmable thermostat is another money-saving option.
  • Add blown-in cellulose or soy-based spray foam insulation to your attic and add an insulated attic door cover.
  • Seal around windows and doors with caulk or weatherstripping materials to keep the cold outside air from coming in.
  • If you live in an older home, make sure your storm windows are closed during cold weather. Storm windows work nearly as well as new double-paned windows.
  • Have your heating system serviced annually to maintain its efficiency.
  • Replace air filters in your heating system according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
