Designs Sought for 3rd Annual Lifecycle Building Challenge

Calling all students, architects, engineers, designers, planners, contractors, builders, reuse experts, educators, and environmental advocates!  Innovative ideas and designs that further advance green building are wanted for the national competition of the Lifecycle Building Challenge.  The key is to promote “the designing of buildings which facilitate disassembly and material reuse to minimize waste, energy consumption, and associated greenhouse gas emissions.”

One of the 2008 winners was a team of students from Carnegie Mellon University (project pictured here).  The team’s “TriPod” modular concept allows homeowners to adapt to life-changing events, such as having a child or embracing the “empty nest”, by adding or subtracting rooms. Recyclable steel is the primary component in this super energy efficient SIP (structural insulated panels) construction.  Solar panels and highly efficient mechanical systems, windows, and appliances round out the home’s sustainable attributes.

Winners are recognized and publicized in national journals and at conferences nationwide. There is no fee to register for the 2009 challenge, and the submission deadline for the competition is August 30, 2009.  The event is presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, The American Institute of Architects, West Coast Green, The Collaborative for High Performance Schools, Southface and BMRA, along with several other sponsors.
