Tune into a special episode on HGTV tonight to view the eco-chic 2009 Green Home in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The latest and greatest in green building technologies and materials were used to build this custom, fully-furnished home. The 2400+ square foot Spanish contemporary will go to one lucky winner this summer.
Native plants and drought-tolerant landscaping complement the home’s exterior. An Energy Star rated metal roof tops the home and a vegetative roof protects the garage. Environmentally sensitive decking materials were used in the backyard. The gardens will provide the future homeowners with their own home-grown herbs, fruits and vegetables. A drum composter will make turning food scraps and yard waste into a rich soil amendment that will allow the gardens to thrive.
Recycled and reclaimed materials and were used throughout the home, like the engineered hardwood flooring that contains 50% recycled content and is made in the USA. Pictured here is the living room which contains lovely driftwood-framed mirrors, among the room’s many green elements. Furnishings and windows are treated with natural fabrics. Even the flat screen LCD television has energy-saving features. Solar tubes and energy-conserving compact fluorescents light up interior spaces. The kitchen and bathrooms boost lots of energy- and water-conserving appliances and fixtures.
Visit HGTV for tours of the house and to enter the sweepstakes, which runs from April 17th through June 5, 2009.
