Eco-friendly Outdoor Furniture, Part II

Whether you’re looking to furnish your patio, deck or backyard with a new table & chair set, benches, Adirondack or lounge chairs, accent tables & planters, or perhaps a porch swing, there are plenty of durable, eco-friendly options for your outdoor spaces.  In part 1 of this series, old skis and snowboards were shown to make unique, fun outdoor furniture.  Part II highlights maintenance-free recycled plastic and sustainably harvested wood furnishings which are available in a wide array of styles, sizes, and colors.

Recycled plastic (high density polyethylene ([HDPE]):  Outdoor furniture made from this material is built-to-last and is resistant to cracking, peeling, splintering and rotting.

  • Minnesota-based Loll Designs focuses on high-quality outdoor furniture with modern design and contemporary appeal, all made in the USA with 100% post-consumer recycled HDPE.
  • Poly-wood furniture is made in Indiana from plastic milk jugs destined for the landfill.  With Poly-wood dealers across the country, this outdoor furniture is easily accessible.  Colors include traditional hues: black, mahogany, hunter green, sand, teak and white, and vibrant colors: sunset red, pacific blue, lemon, lime, tangerine, and aruba.

Sustainably havested wood:  The wood used to make these outdoor furnishings comes from reclaimed & salvaged sources or from well-managed forests.

  • Reforest Teak is a socially responsible company and a great source for Teak furniture, like the set pictured here, from FSC certified teak grown on plantations in Costa Rica.
  • Tennessee-based 11th Hour Furniture specializes in hand-crafted, custom-made furniture for the home and garden.  They use FSC-certified reclaimed and local woods.
