Thinking of building a deck to enjoy your outdoor spaces to the fullest? These days, decking materials come in all sorts of eco-friendly materials, from recycled plastic and composites to FSC-certified lumber and reclaimed wood. Here, in Part I of my series, I’ll reveal the merits of composites that contain recycled polyethylene plastic (non-PVC) mixed with wood fibers. This long-lasting, low-maintenance decking material is resistant to rot, splintering and termites, and doesn’t need painting or staining!
- ChoiceDek boards, railings and accessories are manufactured by Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies and available at Lowes Home Improvement stores. Choose from several colors: Woodtone, Redwood and Gray, and tropical hardwood looks in Driftwood and Spice.

- Rhino Deck is made by Master Mark Plastics, one of the largest plastic recyclers in the United States. It is available in 9 earthy hues and can be purchased at lumber and building supply dealers across the country.
- Trex offers various styles, including the look of tropical hardwoods, rustic grains, as well as a smooth surface deck. It can be found at the Home Depot and Lowes and is available in a wide array of colors.
