Deck out your Outdoor Spaces the Eco-friendly Way, Part I

Thinking of building a deck to enjoy your outdoor spaces to the fullest?  These days, decking materials come in all sorts of eco-friendly materials, from recycled plastic and composites to FSC-certified lumber and reclaimed wood.  Here, in Part I of my series, I’ll reveal the merits of composites that contain recycled polyethylene plastic (non-PVC) mixed with wood fibers.  This long-lasting, low-maintenance decking material is resistant to rot, splintering and termites, and doesn’t need painting or staining!

  • ChoiceDek boards, railings and accessories are manufactured by Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies and available at Lowes Home Improvement stores.  Choose from several colors:  Woodtone, Redwood and Gray, and tropical hardwood looks in Driftwood and Spice.
  • CorrectDeck CX , by Correct Building Products, also resists stains, fading and mold; has a deep imbossed wood grain; and is available in six rich colors.  Find it at lumber and building supply dealers across the country. (pictured here)
  • Rhino Deck is made by Master Mark Plastics, one of the largest plastic recyclers in the United States.  It is available in 9 earthy hues and can be purchased at lumber and building supply dealers across the country.
  • Trex offers various styles, including the look of tropical hardwoods, rustic grains, as well as a smooth surface deck.  It can be found at the Home Depot and Lowes and is available in a wide array of colors.
