I wrote about the merits of innovative green roof systems in a previous post, including stormwater management, reduction of the urban heat-island effect, and habitat for migratory and pollinating species. This June, industry professionals and the public can tour a number of these gardens atop various buildings in Atlanta, Georgia. Workshops at the Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Conference are offered to industry professionals.
Green Roof Tour, June 2:
- Midtown which boasts the city’s most concentrated number of intensive/extensive greenroofs and even a stunning green wall at the luxurious Hotel.
- Northern suburbs of Atlanta where you’ll visit a flagship commercial/office park with garden roofs; Rock Mill Park, an award-winning showcase for stormwater quality treatment utilizing constructed wetlands, sand and bio-filtration ponds, and the Greenroof Pavilion/Greenroof Trial Gardens; and the test greenroof and greenwall at Saul Nursery.
- Emory University’s numerous green roofs.
- The expansive green roofs at Atlanta City Hall and the LEED platinum Southface Eco Office.
Green Roof Tour, June 6:
- The largest sloped vegetative roof in the southeast, the LEED Gold certified Gwinnett County Environmental & Heritage Center. This science/nature center sits amid a 233-acre wooded natural park.
