Add Character with Reclaimed Wood Flooring

One way to reduce demand on our timber resources, is to look for flooring and other products made from reclaimed wood.  This wood is salvaged from old factories, barns and other buildings where local resources were typically utilized to build and furnish them (a green trait).  It may even be sourced from the bottom of rivers.  One of the benefits of reclaimed wood is that it is more dense than the faster-grown woods of today.  These durable, antique floors will last another lifetime while adding style and warmth to your home.

The recovered wood is kiln-dried and re-milled to reveal the beauty that lies beneath.  Reclaimed wood floors are available in a rustic appearance or a with the look of “new” hardwood.  Leave your newly sawn, reclaimed floors unstained to let the rich patina shine through, or have them finished with water-based or pure tung oil finishes.  Tung oil is made from the pressed seed from the nut of the tung tree.

Generally speaking, suppliers in the East and Midwest are sources of white pine, longleaf yellow pine, cypress, oak, walnut, and chestnut reclaimed-wood flooring.  Douglas fir is more commonly found in the West.

There are numerous companies that re-mill and sell reclaimed wood flooring.  Here’s a sampling of reclaimed wood floor suppliers:

In the west, we have other species that are not found in the East. Viridian has secured a stable large supply of reclaimed tropical timbers that we get from dismantling shipping crates from Asia. We turn these into reclaimed wood tables, flooring, paneling and the like.

It is amazing what is being done with Reclaimed Wood these days. I was just reading an article about a couple who make a nice living by rebuilding cabinets out of different strains of Reclaimed wood. Very exotic and environmentally conscious at the same time. I like it.

Reclaimed wood adds such a wonderful touch to homes. My parents have had reclaimed flooring in their home for many years and it attracts many positive comments and admiration from visitors.
