Cool Down with Energy Efficient Air Conditioners

If you’re in the market for a new air conditioner for that hot, stuffy room in your house, be sure to look for an energy efficient model to minimize your electricity bills.  A key step in making the right purchase is to buy an A/C unit that is properly sized.  If the room air conditioner is too large and powerful for your room, it will cost more to operate and may not de-humidify the space correctly.  Of course, if it’s too small, it won’t do a satisfactory job either.

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers tests and certifies home appliances through independent labs to provide customers an assurance of a product’s performance claims.  The organization sponsors a website called where you can learn how to determine the right-sized room air conditioning unit; learn tips for installation and efficient operation; and search for models by manufacturer.

Be sure to note the EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) of the room air conditioners you are considering.  A higher EER, the more efficient the unit will be.  The Consortium for Energy Efficiency offers an easy-to-read chart (in pdf form) of EERs.

The U.S. EPA’s Energy Star program is another helpful way to determine more efficient room air conditoners.  On its site, you can do the following:  Find a Product, Find a Store, Find Special Offers such as sales tax exemptions or credits, rebates, as well as recycling initiatives for the proper disposal of old products.

The EER of a geothermal system is in the 30’s. You should check it out. I just read an article about it…
