East Coast “Green” Movie Studio will be World’s First

When you think of quaint New England towns, you probably don’t envision movie studios, but voters in Plymouth, Massachusetts are welcoming the idea and have approved the construction of a mega film studio complex.  It won’t be any ordinary studio though, it will be built to high performance, green building standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED rating system.

Executives at Plymouth Rock Studios were lured in to build a studio in Massachusetts by the state’s 25% film tax credit. The state-of-the-art, user- and eco-friendly complex will be situated on a 240-acre site which currently comprises a golf course.  It will include 14 sound stages and a 10-acre back lot, plus production offices, post production facilities, a theater, offices and an amenity village.

Gensler, a top global architecture, design and planning firm, will create a carbon neutral facility.  Planned green features include geothermal, solar, and wind energies; local and low-impact materials; energy efficiency strategies; water re-use technologies; organic gardens and composting facilities.

The project will create over 2,000 high income jobs and is expected to be complete in 2010.

I can’t wait to see the studio when it is all complete and earth-friendly. It will be the first of it’s kind! Thanks for blogging!
