Eco-Chic Cabinetry

Whether you’re renovating your kitchen or bath, or looking to add built-ins to a reading nook or media room, you can make environmentally-friendly choices when it comes to cabinetry.  Not only are these choices better for the planet, but they’re also better for your health.

Eco-friendly options for cabinetry include:

  • FSC certified wood:  The Forest Stewardship Council is a non-profit independent organization that certifies wood products that come from well-managed forests where the rights of indigenous people are respected.
  • Alternative woods/Biocomposites:  These products are made from rapidly renewable, natural products.  For instance, wheatboard is made from barley and wheat straw, a waste product of wheat grain production.  Kirei board is made from the waste products of sugar cane and sorghum food production.  Sunflower board is composed of the hulls of sunflowers and resembles burled wood. Hemp panels are made from hemp hurd fiber left over from fabric manufacturing.
  • Reclaimed wood:  Salvaged or antique wood comes from historic barns and buildings and offers a very stable wood with a beautiful patina.

To maintain good indoor air quality for their workers and for your family, eco-conscious companies also use low or no-VOC finishes and adhesives.  VOCs are volatile organic compounds that are harmful to your health when breathed in from products that offgas certain chemicals, such as formaldehyde.

The following makers of fine cabinetry are mindful of the materials they use to manufacture their products:
