Eco-Friendly Drapes to Dress your Windows

One of the easiest ways to give your living room, dining room or bedroom a whole new look is to change out your old draperies.  Today, many styles of drapes are available in eco-friendly fabrics.

Whether you prefer the elegant look of pleated drapes, the contemporary style of drapes hung with metal grommets, or the more casual look of tab-tops or rod-pocket curtains, your new drapes can have a minimal impact on the planet.

For the most eco-friendly drapes, look for those colored or printed with low-impact, plant-based or fiber-reactive dyes.

  • Hemp is a rapidly-growing renewable resource that can be grown organically with no chemicals or pesticides.  The plant makes a strong, durable and long-lasting fabric that is easy to care for with machine washings.  Hemp curtains are available in natural hues and in several colors.
  • Organic cotton is much more sustainable than conventionally grown cotton.  Solids and Prints are available in organic cotton drapes.
  • Sustainable silk doesn’t harm the moths as they emerge from their silk cocoons.  Fabrics made from sustainable silk drape beautifully and add a luxurious feel to any room.
  • Linen is another natural fiber that makes a lovely drape.  You’ll sometimes see linen blended with hemp, organic cotton or bamboo.
  • Bamboo is a fast-growing grass that can be spun into a sumptuous fabric.  A variety of designs are available.
