Eco-friendly Gardening Planters

Trying to keep your container garden truly green this summer?  Today’s marketplace offers many greener options for hanging baskets,window boxes, raised garden beds and patio/deck containers for flowers and veggies.  Look to your local nursery/garden center or online resources to find a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors and price ranges of planters.

WOOD:

  1. Reclaimed wood
  2. Old wine or whiskey barrels
  3. New FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood
  4. Old water troughs

GRASSES:

  1. Bamboo
  2. Sea grass

OTHER NATURAL MATERIALS:

  1. Terra Cotta
  2. Stone, such as reclaimed slate

RECYCLED METAL (like the one pictured above by Yard Art):

  1. Steel
  2. Aluminum
  3. Iron
  4. Copper

RECYCLED PLASTIC:

  1. Recycled polyethylene (sometimes mixed with natural fibers to create a composite material)

RECYCLED GLASS MIXED WITH CONCRETE

RECYCLED TIRES (That’s right, tires!)

ANTIQUES:

  1. Antique planters
  2. Unique found objects such as old wheelbarrows, wagons, baskets, household items, etc.  Just be sure to drill some drainage holes in the bottom.
