Explore Private Gardens this July

Share this on:With summer now in full swing, it’s the perfect time to spend vacation days touring the multitude of beautiful gardens around the country. There’s something for everyone with gardens ranging from historic, fragrant, Japanese, container plantings, plant-specific (rose, iris, lavendar, for example), urban, edible, and private home gardens, to name a few. Some places even host plant sales so you can add elements from your travels to your own garden. Some are free, while others ask for a fee.
Here’s a list of places to visit this July:
- Colorado: Crested Butte Wildflower Festival – July 8-14; El Paso County Open Garden Tour – July 13 & 14; Evergreen Garden Tour – July 13; Strings Kitchen and Garden Tour in Steamboat Springs – July 20, Summit County Annual Garden Tour – July 20.
- Connecticut: Check out amazing bonsai works by members of the Bonsai Society of Greater Hartford; Visit 12 homes & gardens on July 12th at the Black Point House & Garden Tour.
- Indiana, Nashville: Visit the Secret Gardens of Brown County on the 6th & 7th.
- Maine: Tours available now through July 28th at the Old York Garden Club in York; The Camden Garden Club tour is being held on July 18th.
- Massachusetts, East Sandwich: Visit numerous lovely gardens on the Green Briar’s Garden Tour on July 10th in East Sandwich; See the Gardens of Pittsfield on the 20th & 21st.
- Michigan: Visit 10+ private home gardens during the Heritage Hill Garden Tour on July 13th in Grand Rapids; the 2013 Michigan Garden Plant Tour runs from July 29th to August 9th; and the 23rd Annual Welcome to My Garden Tour in Marshall is on the 13th & 14th.
- New Mexico, Santa Fe: See what’s hiding Behind Adobe Walls Home & Garden Tours on the 23rd & 30th.
- New York: Garden Walk Buffalo is a free, self-guided tour of more than 380 gardens. The largest garden tour in America takes place on July 27th and 28th.
- Washington, Seattle area: Many of the gardens on these tours have been going on for decades! These tours are conducted at various dates and locations throughout the month.
- Wisconsin, Madison: This tour features 9 private home gardens, many historic, near the Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
