Green Nature Center Opens Today

alabama4hcenter.jpgThe two go hand-in-hand: environmental education centers and the concept of being environmentally-conscious in the construction of such centers. I enjoy learning about nature as much as the next person, but when I visit a center that perhaps had a negative impact on the very environment it was meant to teach about and therefore instill a sense of protection in its guests, I’m confused and disappointed.

The Alabama 4-H Environmental Science Education Center on Lay Lake near Columbiana has brought this green concept to life in its new LEED Gold certified center. The program coordinator with Alabama 4-H stated, “We will teach visitors that how you build and what you build will have an impact on the environment.” According to the Opelika-Auburn News, “Nearly every aspect of construction and furnishings include some degree of sustainable materials.”

With the current water storage in the south, the new center will also be putting rain water to good use through its 11,000 gallon storage tank and filtering system for its water needs. What a concept!
