Low-Cost, Green Home Makeovers

Just because you may not have an unlimited design budget, doesn’t mean you can’t give the rooms in your home a new and improved look.  There are several strategies to affordable and eco-friendly makeovers:

  1. Take a second look at your current possessions.  Rearrange and swap out furniture, accessories, & drapes, from room to room.
  2. Create a new color scheme by painting with a zero-VOC paint.
  3. Refinish furniture to breath new life into old pieces.  See my earlier posts about non-toxic strippers and wood stains.
  4. Add an organic cotton slipcover to cover that outdated sofa or chair.
  5. Declutter and get organized.  Clean out the closets and the garage.  Clear the mess from shelves, tables, and cabinets.  Not only will your space look better, but you’ll feel less stressed when everything is in its place.
  6. Donate what you no longer use or need to charities, thrift shops, and freecycle.org.
  7. Sell your unwanted goods online at websites like Craig’slist.org and ebay.com, or to your local consignment shop.  Hold a garage sale (keep in mind you’re likely to make more money if you sell online as more buyers bid on your possessions).
