Low Maintenance Decks that Green your Backyard

Share this on:

Considering a new deck to increase your outdoor living space?  Or, perhaps it’s time to replace that splintered old deck or boat dock.  Good news, there are lots of durable eco-friendly choices available today.

Composite decking boards, railings and accessories are great options because they have a wood grain appearance, but these long-lasting materials resist rotting, splintering, mold, mildew and termites, and they don’t need re-painting or re-staining like real wood!  Plus, they can be installed using standard wood tools.

Here’s my list of COMPOSITE DECKS composed of recycled materials:

  • BamDeck Composite, offered by Cali Bamboo, is made from 100% recycled materials (bamboo and HDPE plastic) and comes in 3 colors:  caramel, coffee and slate.  This company donates 1% For the Planet.
  • ChoiceDek, a Weyerhaeuser NR Company, is made with 95% recycled materials and comes in colors of Harvest Brown, Beach House Gray and Coastal Redwood.  It’s available at Lowes and carries a 25-year warranty!
  • Fiberon‘s Outdoor Flooring (pictured above), Horizon Decking, Pro Tect Decking and Professional Decking is made in the U.S.A. from locally sourced reclaimed wood flour and recycled HDPE plastic.  Long warranties are included!  It’s available through dealers and contractors.
  • MoistureShield Composite Decking, by Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies, Inc., contains 95% recycled content (wood fiber and polyethylene plastic) and is available in 9 colors.  They offer a limited lifetime warranty!  Find it at dealers across the U.S.
  • Rhino Deck, made by Minnesota-based company Master Mark Plastics, is made of high-quality recycled post-consumer HDPE resins and is available in 7 rich colors.  A 20-year warranty is offered on their products!  Their decking and railing products are available through distributors across the country.  They support the Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife to help prevent the Rhino from extinction.
