Recycled Paper Makes Cool Countertops

It may seem a little odd to make kitchen and bath countertop surfaces from recycled paper, but such materials are manufactured to be surprisingly durable and versatile for a variety of applications.  They can be used as countertops, tabletops, floors, and wall panels. These easy-to-care-for countertops resist water, stains and scratches, and do not offgas toxic chemicals into your home.  They can be easily fabricated with standard woodworking tools.  Various edge treatments can be created as well.

  • EcoTop is made from a 50/50 blend of FSC certified post-consumer recycled paper and rapidly renewable bamboo fiber.  The fibers are bound with a 100% water-based system.  It won’t fade or discolor over time and resists scratches and stains.  It is available in 10 standard colors, yet custom colors are an option. EcoTop can contribute LEED points for your project.
  • PaperStone is offered in 11 colors and includes two types of post-consumer recycled paper countertops.  “Original” is made from recycled cardboard and “Certified” is made from recycled office paper which is certified to the Forest Stewardship Council standards.   PaperStone can contribute LEED points as well.
  • Richlite makes sustainable countertops from FSC-certified paper and/or recycled paper.  It offers two products that contain post-consumer recycled content:  r50 which contains 50% old corrugated cardboard, and r100 which is made with 100% recycled paper and is also certified by the FSC.  Seven colors are available.
  • Shetkastone is made from all types of paper:  post-consumer and post-industrial fiber based materials, such as magazines, newsprint, cardboard, office paper, even shredded currency).  It is available in 7 colors.
