enviroplank.jpgIf you’re looking for tile for your bathroom, kitchen, foyer, or laundry room floor, consider those made with recycled content. From porcelain and ceramic to terrazzo and glass, tile flooring made with recycled content is getting easier to find in today’s marketplace. Benefits of tile include easy cleaning and maintenance, and its stain-resistance, durability, and long lifespan.

For porcelain tile, Tennessee-based company Crossville, offers EcoCycle tile which is the first porcelain tile with certified recycled content (40%). Scientific Certification Systems, an independent third party certifier of environmental claims, conducts regular audits of their innovative processes and assures that EcoCycle is in strict compliance. It is available in 8 earth-toned colors and is suitable for both residential and commercial applications. Sizes for floor tiles are either 8″ x 8″ or 12″ x 12″ in 5/16″ thickness.

Texas-based company Enviroglas, has perfected its terrazzo planks made from recycled glass and porcelain (from pre-consumer tubs, sinks and toilets) and color-pigmented epoxy resin. The color possibilities are endless with this innovative combination of materials. High gloss or matte finished tiles are available in the following sizes: 6″ x 36″, 12″ x 36″, and 24″ x 36″ in 3/8″ thickness. Enviroplank is suitable for both residential and commercial settings.

California-based company Fireclay Tile, offers hand-made terra cotta tiles containing 50% recycled content from glass, granite dust, and their own manufacturing waste water and waste glaze. The tiles are available in a natural terra cotta (Unglazed), Antique, and Dark Antique. Sizes range from 8″ square, 12″ square, 8″ x 16.25″, 16″ x 16.25″, and various geometric shapes.

Indiana-based company Terra Green Ceramics, has been making recycled content tile since the 1970’s. Its products are certified by Scientific Certification Systems and contain over 55% recycled glass. Its Terra Traffic line is offered in 12 colors that goes all the way through the tile body. Sizes are available in 4″ x 4″, 4″ x 8″, 3″ x 6″, 6″ x 6″, 8″ x 8″, and 12″ x 12″. Coordinating wall tiles in various sizes are also available.  Its floor tiles are suitable for residential and commerical applications.

Floor tile can be either installed professionally or by the handy do-it-yourself homeowner. Use of most of these tiles can contribute to LEED points for your next project if you’re seeking certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
