The Green Side of Drywall

A common element in today’s homes and buildings is the use of drywall as the finish construction of interior walls and ceilings.  Drywall is typically comprised of a common mineral called gypsum which is mixed with fiber, sandwiched between two thick sheets of paper, and then kiln-dried.  It provides a thermal resistance R-value of 0.32 for 3/8ths-inch board, 0.45 for 1/2 inch, 0.56 for 5/8ths inch and 0.83 for 1 inch board.  It also provides a reduction in sound transmission.  The thicker the board, the better noise reduction.  Some innovative companies have integrated recycled materials into the makeup of drywall panels to increase the green quotient.

  • Durra Panels utilizes recovered agricultural by-products and contain straw, paperboard and a non-toxic PVA glue used to bond the paper liner to the straw core.  No preservatives, microbicides or any other additives are used. The manufacturing process of Durra panels is much less energy-intensive than conventional gypsum board and creates a product 10 times stronger.  It is mold resistant and is recyclable at the end of its useful lifespan.
  • EcoRock, by Serious Materials, uses 80% less energy to produce than gypsum drywall and contains 80% post-industrial recycled waste.  It is mold resistant and is a low-emitting product which doesn’t compromise indoor air quality.  It is also recyclable at the end of its useful lifespan.
  • National Gypsum has sustainable manufacturing processes in place.  It uses an energy efficient system, the waste byproduct calcium sulfate (gypsum) from coal-fired power plants, post-consumer recycled paper in the face paper, efficient shipping methods, and techniques to reduce the impact it has on water, air and resources.  It has received GreenGuard certification which ensures its products meet the highest standard for indoor air quality.
