Top 10 Green New Year’s Resolutions

Well, it’s that time again…the new year is approaching fast, and many of you are contemplating which resolutions to make.  Why not incorporate some green practices that will be easy to do all year long?  Here’s my list of top 10 picks for going green at home and at the office:

  1. Walk or bike around town to run errands or to get to work.  Not only will you save money on gas, but you’ll be more physically fit!  Public transportation is also something to keep in mind as the next best option.
  2. Opt to use the stairs instead of the elevator to save power and stay fit.
  3. Turn off the lights when you leave a room and you’ll save on your electricity bills, as well as reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by generating electricity.
  4. Sign up for clean, renewable wind power through your local utility.  Currently, power plants in the U.S. generate about half of our power by burning coal which pollutes our air and the environment, and emits greenhouse gases.
  5. Replace burned-out incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents (CFLs) or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to save a significant amount of energy (and money on your utility bills).
  6. Plug in entertainment and computer equipment into a surge protector.  You’ll protect your equipment from power surges and save energy.  You’d be surprised how much “standby or vampire power” is wasted even when those things are turned off.  Other sources of standby power include unplugged (when they are not needed) cell phone chargers, adapters for laptops, and small appliances.
  7. Make sure the thermostat is set to a reasonable temperature (not too cold in the summer, and not too hot in the winter) to conserve power and lower energy bills.  Programmable thermostats do a great job of energy conservation.
  8. If you’re in need of a new computer, consider a laptop.  Not only are they easily transportable, but they’re also more energy efficient.  Be selective and minimize what you print out from the computer to save trees.  Opt to use recycled content paper.
  9. Add inexpensive aerators to your kitchen and bath faucets, and add a water-efficient showerhead, to conserve water without sacrificing a powerful stream of water.  This will save you money on your water bill too.
  10. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!  These three strategies can have a huge impact on the environment.

With regards to faucet aerators keep in mind there are various levels of water saving aerators. Most low flow aerators start at 2.5 gallons per minute and go as low as .5 gallons per minute. Here is a link to examples of what to look for at the hardware store. http://www.faucetaerators.com/faucet-aerators-c-21.html
